What is a Pretest Lesson?

A pretest lesson is a one-hour session focused entirely on your driving test. Your instructor drives you through the actual routes used by the tester at your booked test centre. You practise the junctions, roundabouts, and road sections that come up on test day.

The price includes car hire for the test itself. You drive the same dual-controlled car you practised in. No need to arrange a car or find an accompanying driver.

Pretest lessons are for learners who have already completed their EDT or most of it. If you are still in the early stages, a regular lesson package is the better fit.

Know Exactly What to Expect

Your Test Day, Hour by Hour

The driving test follows the same pattern every time. No surprises. Here is how the day goes.

60 Minutes Before
Your instructor picks you up
We collect you from home or a meeting point near the test centre. You get a warm-up drive on the test routes to settle your nerves and loosen up.
15 Minutes Before
Arrive at the test centre
Park up and head inside. Bring your learner permit, logbook, and glasses if required. The tester will call your name.
Test Start
Technical checks (2 minutes)
The tester asks a few questions about the car. Where is the fog light switch? How do you check the tyre tread? You will have practised all of these.
On the Road
Driving section (25-30 minutes)
The tester gives directions. Left here, right at the next junction, follow the road. These are the same routes you drove in your pretest lesson. You know them already.
During the Drive
Turnabout and reverse
At some point the tester asks for a turnabout (three-point turn) and a reverse around a corner or into a space. Practise these until they are automatic.
Back at the Centre
Result (on the spot)
The tester gives you the result straight away. If you pass, you get a Certificate of Competency. If not, you get a detailed fault sheet so you know exactly what to work on.

Common Questions

Pretest FAQ

A pretest lesson is one hour long. You spend the full hour driving the actual routes used by the tester at your booked test centre. There is no classroom time and no theory. It is all behind the wheel.
Yes. The pretest price (€183.63 manual, €193.81 automatic) includes car hire for the test itself. You drive the same dual-controlled car you practised in. No need to arrange your own vehicle.
Book at least one week before your test date. Two weeks is better, especially during busy periods like January and September. This gives you time to absorb the route knowledge and address any weak areas.
All four RSA test centres in Cork: Wilton (Doughcloyne Industrial Estate), Ballincollig (Tanner Park), Mallow (County Council Offices, Annabella), and Skibbereen (Rugby Club, Mill Road).
Pretest lessons are designed for learners who have completed or nearly completed their 12 EDT lessons. If you still have several lessons left, complete those first. The pretest is a final polish, not a replacement for proper training.
You can rebook another test through the RSA and book another pretest lesson with us. Many learners pass on their second attempt after addressing the specific faults from their first test. Your instructor will focus your next pretest on those exact areas.
Yes. We offer both manual and automatic pretest lessons at all four Cork test centres. The automatic pretest costs €193.81 including car hire. You can also view all pricing on our pricing page.
